1938 princess frock
This dress was a final project for a draping class I was in at SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design). I was tasked with choosing a historical garment (pre - 1960s) to recreate through means of draping and flat patterning. I chose a Princess Frock gown from a Sears Roebuck Spring/Summer catalogue of 1938. I carefully researched other sewing patterns of the time period to help determine what the back of the dress should look like, as a front view illustration of the garment was the only helpful visual reference provided. I began by draping and figuring things out on a half-scale form. I then scaled the flat drafted pattern up and made a muslin mock-up. I smoothed out any fitting issues and edited my pattern before moving on to my final materials. I picked a flowy poly-crepe print fabric for the final fashion fabric. I used a heavier muslin to stabilize and give structure to the puffed sleeves.
